Accumulating evidence show that sulfur dioxide participates in various biological processes in animals, but there is limited information on the regulatory role of SO2/sulfite in plants. Here we show that SO2 donor Na2SO3/NaHSO3(3∶1)alleviates programmed cell death(PCD)in wheat aleurone layers in a dose dependent manner with the optimal concentration of 100 μM.SO2 donor could decrease reactive oxygen species(ROS)accumulation in wheat aleurone cells and, could significantly enhance the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase and guaiacol peroxidase.
