Nematodes are obligate biotrophs that have diverse feeding strategies to obtain nutrients from the host plant tissues. For the purposes of pathogen recognition, plants have evolved a two-tier detection system. At first, microbes reveal their presence to plants with molecules that are present on their exterior surfaces. These microbes or pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPS) are recognized by plant cell surface receptors-pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) leading to activation of PAMP-triggered immunity (PTI).
