In the course of the 18th century, the design of wooden bridges underwent a significant evolution, reflecting the advances in structural mechanics, in the knowledge of the mechanical behaviour of timber, and in the development of new structural schemes.A clear example of this evolution in bridge design can be found in the works by Joseph Ritter, who operated in Switzerland in the second half of the 18th century. In the paper a selection of five bridges designed by Joseph Ritter is presented;through the analysis of the structural solutions, both the advances in the knowledge of the mechanical behaviour and the progressive evolution in the design schemes are shown.
