Rapid increases in pollutant emissions in conjunction with stagnant meteorological conditions result in frequent haze pollutions in China. In order to understand the meteorological drivers of haze pollution in a changing climate, here a correlation analysis showed that the variations in sea surface temperature (SST) in Ni(n)o 3.4 region of in the tropical Pacific could significantly exert an influence on the wintertime haze occurrence in Southern China (SC) based on the observations from 1981 to 2010.
