Canonical dimension of a smooth and proper variety X over a field F is defined as the essential dimension of the functor associating to a field extension L/F the empty set if the set X(L) is empty and a singleton otherwise.If the canonical dimension of X is equal to the usual dimension of X,the variety X is called incompressible.
