Non-coding small RNAs function to regulate gene expression at both transcriptional and posttranscriptional levels,guiding modification of chromatin and controlling developmental pathways,and are present in diverse eukaryotic organisms.Among these molecules,21-25 nt small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs) are the two major types,both of which are produced by RNase Ill-like enzyme called Dicer in plants.MiRNAs originate from "hairpin" precursors transcribed from one strand of distinct genomic loci,which adopts a fold-back structure by complementary base pairing,whereas siRNAs are processed from long double-stranded RNA molecules.
