This work presents 3-D numerical simulation of ice accretion on a 5 MW horizontal axis wind turbine operating under icing conditions. The two-phase flow is simulated with Fluent and the ice layer is calculated using Matlab.

The wind turbine blades’ icing often occurs under cold climates when the blades suffer from super-cooling droplets. Ice on blades changes the airfoil profile, reducing the efficiency of wind turbine.
