Background: Rapid expansion of internet use in China offers an opportunity for large numbers of individuals who are unwilling to use traditional services to obtain anonymous assessment and treatment for psychological problems.Methods: A self-completion questionnaire based on the depression section of the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-Ⅳ (SCID) without skip-out questions and a free one to one psychological consultation system was installed on the Beijing Suicide Research and Prevention Centre website.From March 2009 to March 2011, 1,062 different individuals completed the questionnaire and got the one to one psychological services.Results: Among the clients, 50.1% were women, their mean (sd) age was 26 (7), 47% had some university education, 68.6% had never married; 29% lived in large cities, 32% in small to middle-sized cities, and 39% in towns and villages.They ask for help mostly for mental health problem (44.2%) and the conflicts among the families or between partners (25.2%); 62% need access the mental health services but only 3.4% got the proper mental health services.13.6% had made a prior suicide attempt and 60.2% reported suicidal ideation, plans or attempts in the prior month.37% had a current major depressive episode, 8% a minor depressive episode (i.e., 2-4 symptoms) and 9.9% dysthymia; only 35.9% had ever sought help for their psychological problems.Suicide attempters were more likely to be female (62.7% vs.48.6%; x2=9.77, p<0.05); to have higher depression score (79.06% vs.60.04%; T=5.30, p<0.001); to be divorced, separated or widowed (9.7% vs.4.5%; x2=7.12, p<0.05).Conclusion: Young educated Chinese who access web-based psychological services report high levels of depressive symptoms and suicidality.The current challenge is to develop effective interventions that they will be willing to utilize.
