Comparisons of Simultaneous Wind Measurements by Colocated Meteor and MF Radars over Langfang, China

Both the meteor radar and medium-frequency (MF) radar are the most popular instruments in measuring the neutral winds in mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) with their advantage of continuous observation over a particular site.Simultaneous wind measurements have been obtained by an all-sky meteor and a colocated MF spaced antenna radar over Langfang,China (39.4°N,116.7°E) since July,2010.The spatial separation of the two radars is approximately 185 m.This provides an excellent opportunity to carry out a comparison study of MLT winds measured by these two independent radar systems.Langfang all-sky meteor radar operates at 35 MHz and involves the determination of winds using underdense meteor drifts.It provides hourly zonal and meridional winds in the MLT region with height resolution of 2 km.Langfang MF radar operates at 1.99 MHz and applies the spaced antenna technique.It provides measurements of horizontal neutral winds at 4 min intervals and with a height resolution of 2 km between 60-98km at daytime and 80-98 km at nighttime.
