Basic concepts of nuclear mean-field models are briefly reviewed.The mean-filed picture with any phenomenological interaction without the state dependence cannot account for the nuclear saturation.This state dependence is successfully taken into account by the density dependence,leading to the energy density functional.Then,I show the time-dependent density-functional approach to the giant resonances.
