Study on the hydrogen storage properties and poisoning resistance of Pd-coated La-Ni-Al alloy

  In recent years,La-Ni-Al alloy has been paid more attention for its tritium processing application in thermonuclear fusion reactors tritium processing.However,La-Ni-Al alloy is poisoned severely by impurities such as O2,H2O,CO,CO2,N2 and hydrocarbonsin the practical application.To improve the poisoning resistance of La-Ni-Al alloy,Pd membranes have been prepared over the surface of the alloy substrates by using electroless plating method.The characteristics of Pd membranes have been examined by XRD,SEM,and EPMA technologies.From SEM images,the uniform and compact thin Pd film was revealed.The thickness of the Pd film was about 1.0μm.The effect of this Pd film was evaluated by comparing the hydrogen absorption properties of bare and Pd-coated in the practical application,specimens in contaminated hydrogen gas.As a result,the Pd membrane was effective in improving the durability of the La-Ni-Al alloy.And after ten cycles of hydrogen absorption and desorption processing,the hydrogen absorption capacity of Pd/La-Ni-Al was maintained at about 95%,meaning that the sample showed long cycle life for hydrogen processing in contaminated hydrogen gas.
