Precipitate microstructure is probably the most important and most studied materials microstructure.Precipitation hardening has been employed for more than one century to improve the strength and toughness of various high performance alloys.Precipitation, formation of particles of second phases from a supersaturated solid solution matrix phase, is a solid state phase transformation process that is thermo-chemically driven and fully governed by system (bulk and interface) thermodynamics and kinetics.
