This paper sets out to discuss the issue of transparency of chunks and its relationship with the attitude of language users in English and Chinese.By transparency of chunks,we mean their qualities or statements of being understood or recognized compositionally.In other words,if we know the meaning of individual words,then we know the meaning of the transparent chunk,since it is predictable by rule,as an intersection of the meanings of the constituent words (Stubbs 2002:220).
