Herb Pair in the complex prescription of Traditional Chinese Medicine is derived from the clinical practices and experiences for thousands of years.It was composed simply with the basic characterization of prescription compatibility and embodied the specific advantage of Traditional Chinese Medicine.In recent years, there has been increasing concern that the herb pair acts as the foundation of prescription and has intrinsic combination law.Based on the theory, we discuss the historical origins and formations of the herb pair.Then we propose application of the herb pair with attempt to uncover the complex prescription compatibility underlying.These data may supply some references for the rational application of herb pair in clinic, lay the foundation for new drug development from Traditional Chinese Medicine and lead to the step by step modermization for Traditional Chinese Medicine.
