Sarcosine is coadministered in the effective treatment of certain schizophrenia, and also reported to be a marker for prostate cancer with conflicting results.A fluorimetric liquid chromatographic method was studied for the analysis of sarcosine at trace levels based on fluorescence derivatization and liquid chromatography. The results indicated that sarcosine can be easily derivatized with (2-naphthoxy)acetyl chloride at mild conditions. The resulting naphthoxy derivative is highly responsive to a fluorescence detector (excitation at 225 nm and emission at 360 nm) after isocratically separated on a phenyl-hexyl column. The detection limit of the method is about 0.05 μM of sarcosine (S/N =3, injection volume 10 μL).Application of the method to the analysis of sarcosine in biosample (urine or plasma) is being developed.
