With 23 genera and over 750 species,Ajugoideae is the third-largest subfamily of Lamiaceae and distributed worldwide.Although substantial progress has been made towards discerning phylogenetic relationships and generic boundaries in Ajugoideae, some major questions, especially the lack of the well-supported backbone phylogeny, and unclear phylogenetic relationships among Caryopteris and allied genera, still remain.
