The design of future cities is of paramount importance,considering both the need of a societal transition toward a sustainable lifestyle and the fact that nearly half of the worlds population is living within growing urban areas.Finding the appropriate solutions for a sustainable future of cities requires the understanding of its dynamics.In particular,since a transition toward low-carbon conditions will be required,it is important to know which was the status of cities under such conditions,assessing them against the known three pillars of sustainability (i.e.: environmental,economic,social).
