Introduction : During the past 11 years, Zhejiang has built the China's largest newborn screening center.The aim of this study was to analyze and summarize the status of newborn screening in Zhejiang from 1999 to 2009.Methods: We analyzed newborn screening data collected from 1999 to 2009 at Zhejiang Key Laboratory for Diagnosis and Therapy of Newborn Diseases in Zhejiang, China.Results : From 1999 ~ 2009, 3875228 newborns were screened.2309 cases were confirmed as CH and 155 cases were confirmed as PKU.The incidence of congenital hypothyroidism (CH) was 1∶1678, and the incidence of phenylketonuria (PKU) was 1∶25001.After one decade of development, the number of annual screening newborns was more than 590 thousand, with the screening rate of 97.75%.The Zhejiang province, firstly ascertained nationwide, developed new software for managing and serving newborn screening.The information web quality management software system greatly improved the quantity of screened newborns, management efficiency as well as the quality of newborn screening.Conclusions: After 11 years of hard work, Zhejiang newborn screening center became the China's largest newborn screening center with more than 590 thousand annual screening newborn quantity.Also, it explored a resource-saving medical screening mode, which made this newborn screening center an exemplar in China.
