  Systemic (I.P.) and/or intraseptal (I.S.) administration of scopolamine (SCP) and diazepam (DZP) induces amnesia.The septo-hippoeampal cholinergic system has been pointed out as a possible site ofSCP-and DZP-induced amnesia as well as for the mnemonics effects induced by substance P (SP 1-11) and choline chloride (ChCl).Taking these indications into account we investigated the interactions between cholinergic and GABA/benzodiazepines (GABA/BZD) systems with the SPergic system on inhibitory avoidance retention in rats.Ours results showed that rats pre-treated with SCP and DZP showed amnesia, as previously shown in the literature.However, post treatment with SP 1-11, SP 1-7 or ChCl blocked the amnesic effects of both SCP and DZP.These findings indicate an interaction between cholinergic, GABAergic and SPergic systems in the modulation of inhibitory avoidance retention and that the effects of these treatments are mediated, at least in part, by changes in the septo-hipocampal pathway.
