Piled foundations are widely used to underpin both onshore and offshore structures, such as offshore oil platforms,cross-river/strait bridges, wind turbines, with the driven piles being the major type However, practical tools for calculating their capacity have, until recently, been relatively unreliable, which is mainly due to the uncertainties related to the influence by the pile driven and also stress regime variations adjacent to pile shaft and its near field. The general behaviour of driven pile in sand is closely related to the complex mechanical and constitutive characteristics of sand,in particular to pile-sand interaction including the shear banding at the interface under complex loading conditions. This talk will review some new developments made in recent years, including the particle crushing and shear band during the pile insulation, stress conditions on the pile shaft and adjacent field, cyclic response of driven piles, time effect of the capacity, date base assessment of the design methods. The outcome of this research is to improve our understanding of driven pile behaviour, and to advance pile design methods for eventual application by Industry delivering benefits to construction safety and efficiency.
