Human activities have contaminated large areas in both developed and developing countries. The contaminants have negative effects on the ecosystems and other natural resources and pose additional danger to public health,as pollutants can enter food via agricultural products or leach out into drinking water.Phytoextraetion is a promising approach for cleaning up heavy metal contaminated soils.Non-ferrous metals mine areas are very good places for exploration of heavy metal tolerantor, accumulator or hyperaccumulator.Field investigation was conducted at zinc-lead mine areas in Zhejiang Province, and the dominant plants were collected, the Zn,Pb and Cd contents in shoots were determined.Hydroponics culture was also set up to confirm the metal tolerance and accumulation. Results showed that Fuyang ecotype of Sedum alfredii Hance, has high biomass and very high zinc tolerance, with high shoot concentrations, but does not achieve hyperaccumulation of Zn.Its shoot Cd concentration averaged 814 mg kg-1 when the nutrient solution Cd concentration was 50 μmoles per liter.Heavy metal hyperaccumulation and non accumulation ecotype were found 5 five years ago. This is the first time Zn,Cd tolerance and accumulation ecotype of Sedum alfrcdii was reported. It might be helpful for probing into the mechanism of Zn,Cd hyperaccumulation by Sedum alfredii plants.
