Smooth steel bar is the mostly used material type as dowels. However, corrosion is a significant problem for the steel bars in wet or alkaline environments. The major objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) dowels and the effectiveness of pavement joints.Several types of GFRP dowel sections were considered: concrete or cement mortar-filled, round and elliptical tubes in addition to solid bar.Two series of pavement specimens with different dowel sections were made and tested under static or cyclic loading. These dowel-jointed pavements were also modeled and analyzed by means of finite element to investigate the deformations and stresses of both dowels and the adjacent pavement concrete.
