  Maternal copper deficiency in mammals is known to severely restrict offspring growth and development.Accordingly, the maternal dietary requirements for copper are higher during pregnancy and lactation.Studies in mice have shown that during copper deficiency the liver of lactating females provides a critical source of copper to sustain neonatal growth, however, the underlying mechanisms are unknown.In this study, we demonstrate for the first time that the copper exporter, ATP7B, which functions in biliary copper excretion, is suppressed during pregnancy and lactation in female mice, suggesting a mechanism to prevent copper losses during this period of high copper demand.
