Transport and machinery operation speeds are experiencing unceasing growth nowadays. It is being accompanied by increase of loads that frictional joints are exposed to.To design friction surfaces withstanding tough contact conditions, coatings are widely adopted.Experiments show that increase of relative velocity of a sliding frictional contact leads to situation when contact temperature and stresses grow abruptly, signalizing occurrence of frictional thermoelastic instability.Investigation on conditions of thermoelastic instability is required for improvement of lifetime of modern equipment.Wear of coating is the major factor influencing contact characteristics, which is though being ignored by many modem theoretical studies on thermoelastic instability.
