线粒体铁蛋白(mitochondrial ferritin,MtFt)是2001发现的由一个无内含子的基因编码的新蛋白,蛋白前体在细胞质中合成,在信号肽的引导下进入线粒体进行酶切反应,成熟的表达产物定位于线粒体上.对MtFt的序列分析表明,人的MtFt和胞质的H亚基具有更高度的同源性,并具有亚铁氧化酶活性.同胞质ferritin一样MtFt能够截获过多的铁,这一功能对线粒体来说可能是必不可少的,因为线粒体是血红素和Fe/S蛋白复合体合成的场所,总是暴露在高铁流动的环境中,而线粒体在其呼吸链的电子传递过程中又会产生ROS,它和铁通过Fenton反应可以转化为更强活性的对细胞有毒性的自由基,所以MtFt以截获铁的形式储存铁以减少自由基的产生而保护细胞免受氧化损伤.MtFt的过表达造成铁在胞质和线粒体的重新分配,而且这种效应可以被铁螯合剂增强.
