Objective: To analyze the outcome in relation to the expression of P27 and phosphorylated P27 (p-P27) in patients with gastric cancer. Methods: A total of 130 patients from our hospital (Jan 1997 to Dec 2001) were included. All patients survived after radical resection and were proven gastric cancer with pathologically.Immunohistochemistry for P27 and p-P27, were carried out in 130 gastric carcinomas; expression levels were correlated with invasive potential and prognosis. The relationship of the expression levels between P27 and p-P27 were analyzed. Results: Of the 130 cases analyzed, the average age was 51.9 years. The ratio of serosa infiltration and regional lymph nodes metastasis was lower in patients of P27 positive expression than in negative expression (p<0.01).The ratio of serosa infiltration and regional lymph nodes metastasis was lower in patients of p-P27 negative expression than in positive expression (p<0.01).The cumulative survival rate and survival time in patients of P27 positive expression and p-P27 negative expression were longer. The prognosis was well in patients of P27 positive expression combined with p-P27 negative expression. The prognosis was poor in patients of P27 negative expression weather or not the p-P27 expression. There was negative correlation between P27 and p-P27 expression in gastric cancer. Conclusion: Patients positive for P27 and negative for p-P27 have a favorable prognosis. The proteins of P27 and p-P27 were the major factors to the prognosis of gastric cancer, and they were negative correlation.
