Male infertility is a complex multifactorial and polygenic disease,and overweight or obesity factors play an important role in its formation and development.There are evidences that resveratrol is able to modulate the behavior of cells in response to damage and can decrease germ cells apoptosis in mice and rats.In this study,we have evaluated the semen quality parameters and serum sex hormone levels in 324 men.Underweight and obesity groups had the progressive motility significantly decreased.The sperm concentration,normal sperm morphology and T levels in abnormal weight groups showed significant decrease,however the E2 level was significantly increased.Overweight and obesity groups had the semen volume significantly decreased.The seminal plasma zinc concentration and spermatozoa acrosin activity decreased significantly in the obesity group.Underweight,overweight and obesity groups showed significant increase in DNA fragmentation rates.When semen samples were treated with resveratrol for 30min,we found that spermatozoa acrosin activity increased significantly in experimental group.These data suggest that male obesity has negative impacts on fertility through changes at hormonal levels,as well as direct changes to sperm function and sperm molecular composition.We have demonstrated the therapeutic and protective efficacy of resveratrol against obesity-induced disturbed semen parameters.
