Modern buildings are becoming more irregular and complex in shape.During earthquakes, irregularly shaped buildings may vibrate in a lateral-torsional manner with significant swaying and twisting.In seismic design of these buildings, structural engineers are required to devise a cost-efficient structural system with optimal topological arrangement of structural members to best resist lateral-torsional motions due to earthquakes.The development of the optimal structural topology for a practical building involving the simultaneous considerations of all structural members is a very challenging task.It is necessary that a robust topology and element sizing optimization method be developed for seismic design of modern high-rise buildings.
