Effect of Exterior Sulfate at Different Positions on the Mobility of Phosphorus in Lake Nanhu, Wuhan

To investigate the effect of exterior sulfate on the mobility of phosphorus,sulfate was respectively added to the overlying water and sediments sampled from Lake Nanhu,Wuhan,China,and the variations of pH,sulfate,soluble reactive phosphate (SRP),and total phosphorus (TP) were analyzed.The results showed that,the sulfate in pore water declined more quickly than that in overlying water which meant that sulfate reduction action occur mostly in sediments.pH in the samples with exterior sulfate generally became higher than that in the control without exterior sulfate,especially in the metaphase.The TP in overlying water of samples with exterior sulfate addition encountered increase in the first week,and the TP in overlying water of samples with exterior sulfate addition to sediments ascended even two times higher than that with exterior sulfate addition to overlying water.However,the TP of all samples with sulfate addition decreased to similar level in subsequent several weeks.The SRP in overlying water experienced similar variation tendency to the TP.It was implied that the exterior sulfate could stimulate the short-term phosphorus release from the sediments,but the phosphorus released unsustainably and deposited to the sediments in the long run.
