Study of micro mixers for industrial emulsifications

  Microfluidic devices have been intensively studied for their use in emulsification processes.The main applications lie in two areas.Firstly,the micro devices can help to produce controllable preparation of monodispersed emulsions 1,2 as a result of the geometry restriction defined on purpose,which are widely studied because monodispersed emulsions are featured by the improved stability and the facilitated property control 3.Secondly,micro devices can be used for industrial emulsification due to its possibility for giving high throughputs with a continuous process 4.The current work is focused on the latter case and intended to systematically study the industrial emulsification process by using micro mixers.The product from a batch industrial emulsification process has been taken as reference.Four types of micro mixers,V-type mixers,butterfly mixers,cyclone mixers and nozzle mixers were tested.By comparing the different types of mixers,the effectiveness of different mixing or emulsification mechanisms has been studied.By varying the dimensions of each type of mixers,the influence of the key parameters has been investigated.The processes with micro mixers are generally composed of droplet formation,break-up,coalescence or stabilisation.Due to the lack of visualisation or detection techniques in situ,only the averaged droplet sizes and the distribution of the final products were taken for evaluation of the emulsion quality.The pressure loss through the micro devices was taken as the main mechanical energy input.
