The technique of capillary electrophoresis hyphenated with mass spectrometry (CE-MS) was first introduced in 1987 by the group of R.D.Smith and since that time, the methodological developments have been focused on the ionization methods and the hyphenation techniques.Till now, the coaxial sheath-liquid interface and electrospray ionization (ESI) mode were found to be the most frequently used type of coupling for CE-MS and have been applied to many kinds of analytical tasks. However, some studies showed that the effect of the nebulizer gas flow parameter, so called "Siphoning phenomenon" or "Suction effect", should not be ignored in the optimization of CE-MS separation. The nebulizer gas may form a vacuum at the minute tip of the interface, and siphon liquid from the CE capillary outlet, which increases the speed of the bulk solution in the capillary, and thus, reduces analysis time and has significantly negative effect on the CE separation and MS response.
