A novel organic-silica hybrid monolithic column was prepared successfully by using 1-vinyl- 3-octylimidazolium chloride (ViOcIm+Cl-) as functional monomer,N,N-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) together with 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (γ-MAPS) as binary cross-linker in the anhydrous system. Here, two reactions were involved, including the radical copolymerization of the C=C bond and non-hydrolytic sol-gel (NHSG) condensation of γ-MAPS catalyzed by formic acid.In the NHSG technique, little or no water is required, which not only avoids the cracking and shrinking of the bed resulting from aging and drying steps at high temperatures, but also contributes to the simultaneous introduction of hydrophobic groups.Moreover,γ-MAPS possessing great activity in polymerization reactions was used as the cross-linker instead of pretreatment reagent for capillary wall as previous reports described. So,in the improved “one-pot” approach, only a single thermal treatment step was required, which would represent a simpler and more convenient way to prepare organic-silica hybrid monolithic columns compared to the previous “one-pot” approach.
