Urticaria episodes that continue for more than 6 weeks without any physical, allergic, infectious, drug-related or vasculitic cause are typically termed chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU).It is often difficult to treat.Although histamine-releasing activity is detectable for up to 50% of CIU patients, antihistamine therapy provides only a limited response.
