Effects of Pintle-tip Angles on Spray Characteristics of Movable Pintle Injector

  In order to develop a throttleable rocket engine,variable area injector is known as a suitable choice because it is difficult to control thrust using a fixed shape injector with high-efficiency.In addition,a pintle injector which is the one of variable area injectors is able to substitute a large injector plate with many injector elements by a unit injector.In spite of these advantages,it is difficult to design the pintle injector due to complex design parameters and moving mechanism.Even considering only pintle tip except the driving system and other structures,there are many factors to optimize such as a tip angle,a tip thickness and an initial opening distance.In this study,pintle tip angles were focused as major design parameters with 20 and 40 degrees and cold flow experiment was conducted by using water and air.Spray angles and droplet diameters were measured as performance parameters by a backlight imaging method and a laser diffraction method.In order to obtain backlit images,a strobe scope and CMOS camera were used.From the spray images,breakup characteristics and spray angles were analyzed.Also,a Malvern type instrument was adopted to measure Sauter mean diameters,which is based on laser diffraction theory.As a result,different breakup regimes were shown due to non-dimensional numbers and pintle tip angles.The normalized spray angle has exponential correlation with the momentum ratio and the normalized SMD was inversely proportional to the Weber number.
