MELTING BEHAVIOR OF PEO SINGLE CRYSTALS AT SURFACE: MOLECULAR DYNAMICS SIMULATION AND AFM OBSERVATIO

The morphological evolution of polyethylene oxide (PEO) solution-grown single crystalsduring melting was studied using hot-stage atomic force microscopy.We show that themorphology of polymer droplets depends on temperature of melts.Figure 1 and 2 show that thePEO single crystals on edge-on and flat-on iPB-1 crystalline film surface melt approximately atsame temperature,which confirmed our theoretical prediction.However,the pattern ofmorphological evolution of the single crystals on a flat-on iPB-1 crystal surface was different fromthat on an edge-on iPB-1 crystal surface.Since the PEO melt had a larger contact angle on theflat-on iPB-1 crystal surface,these differences in the melting behavior were ascribed to thedifferent interfacial interactions between the single crystal and the substrate.
