Since high efficiency polycrystalline Nd:YAG ceramic laser was reported by the present author in 1995,various transparent ceramic laser materials such as Yb:YSAG,Nd:Y2O3 etc.with optical grade have been developed worldwide.Nowadays,ceramic materials have realized ultra-short pulse(pico-second,femtosecond)laser oscillation by controlling the spectral width of fluorescent elements such as Nd,Yb etc.Moreover,development of ceramic composite laser elements with complicated structure has also become reported and solid-state laser is at the dawn of a new laser era.Since ceramic technology offers design flexibility in a macro-,micro-and molecular level,there are many possibilities for the creation of high power laser,development of high output laser using microchip and laser technologies which are not possible with the conventional single crystals.
