Age-adjusted cardiovascular disease has been significantly decreasing over the past several decades in the United States. The mechanism of this encouraging decline in vascular morbidity and mortality is multifactorial and involves recognition of established cardiovascular risk factors, institution of intensive medical risk management and improvement in surgical and percutaneous revascularization techniques. The classical modifiable risk factors include hypertension, dyslipidemia, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, tobacco consumption and diabetes mellitus. However, the search for new modifiable risk factors is a major focus of cardiovascular research.Arteries may be looked upon as a unique system of distensible conduits that contain the pulsatile output of the heart and provide continuous blood flow to the peripheral tissues.During systole, the transmission of blood from the heart generates a pressure wave which is propagated to all arteries within the body.
