Macrobenthic invertebrates are a very important group of bioturbators in soft substrate benthic ecosystems where they exert a structuring influence on the habitat and sediment particle distribution. They have in structuring sedimentary benthic habitats by actives, grazing, predation or bioturbation.Irregular, burrowing animals can have an important influence on their soft sediment habitats in a variety of ways,e.g.affecting sediment permeability and water content, destabilizing chemical gradients in pore water, subducting organic matter, and influencing rates of remineralization and inorganic nutrient efflux. This kind of activity has significant effects on the fluxes of particulates, nutrients and oxygen across the sediment-water interface. This increased oxic layer can lead to decreased anoxic processes such as denitrification and promote aerobic processes such as nitrification of ammonium to nitrate. The mixing and displacement of sediment by benthic macrofauna(bioturbation)can control rates of organic matter degradation and carbon burial. The macrobenthic assemblages as the engineering organisms also play and vital important roles on affecting the stability and erodability of natural cohesive sediments, then structure the topography of sediment. In this work,we reviews the ongoing researches on the above field, including the experimental methods and equipment in situ and in laboratory, the current research focus, research prospect, which will provide important information for implementation of related research in China.
