Lantibiotics are ribosomally synthesized, post-translationally modified antimicrobial peptides produced by gram-positive bacteria.Due to their novel and specific mode of action or important roles as phermones (such as development related SapB produced by Streptomyces coelicolor), lantibiotics attracted widespread scientific attention in recent years not only as promising safe food additives but also as potential chemotherapeutic agents.
