We have observed that iron uptake into bovine aortic endothelial cells is via two parallel pathways.Via,either L or T type Ca channels which is enhanced by reducing pH from 7.4 to pH 6.0 by ≈ twofold and is inhibited by verapamil M).Additionally, there is iron uptake via the facilatitive glucose transporter GLUT1, when Fe is chelated to quercetin. This iron saturable process (Kn 0.7 M) is inhibited by reducing the medium pH to 6.0;is insensitive to verapamil, but is blocked by the glucose transporter specific inhibitor, cytochalasin B.These findings demonstrate the independence of these two iron transport processes.
