The growth and physiology of the seaweed Gracilaria lemaneiformis were investigated under different sodium selenite concentrations.low concentrations of sodium selenite,Na2SeO3,promoted growth and increased Chlorophyll a,carotenoid and phycobiliprotein.The most favorable concentration for growth was 750 mg/L Na2SeO3.When the concentration of Na2SeO3 was higher than 1000 mg/L,the pigment concentration was significantly lower than in the control groups.Se accumulation in the algal biomass was linearly related to the selenate dose.At the end of the growth period organic selenium in Gracilaria lemaneiformis was above 80% in all of the investigated groups.Our studies suggest that Gracilaria lemaneiformis has a good ability to transformed inorganic selenium into organic selenium and is,therefore,a good carrier of it.
