The Old Summer Palace (Yuanmingyuan),located in the northwestern suburbs of Beijing,shaped for more than 130 years the imperial garden ideal of the Qing dynasty.The virtual reconstruction of Yuanmingyuan, launched in 2009 as part of the "Re-Relic" program at Tsinghua University, is a significant part of a comprehensive conservation program for cultural heritage and visualization with the aim of preserving information already believed to be lost and no longer physically existent art and architecture.The exhibition "A Touch of Purple and Gold" follows the inspiration of this revival of the "Garden of Gardens".Faced with the situation that the graphic material only exists in digital form,I realized that bits and bytes are transitory.The idea arose to convert these creations of modern computer technology into traditional copperplate engarvings, which, as we know, can survive for centuries in unchanged beauty.The result are ten graphics, etchings on handmade paper supplemented by watercolour and gold-leaf.They show exemplary views of the magical places of Yuanmingyuan.Through the expertise of the architects as well as through the traditional art of printing it was possible to convey the special atmosphere of Yuanmingyuan by means of the digital world to contemporary eyes.
