This study was to investigate the treatment effects of Xuebijing injection in severe septic patients with disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC).A total of 171 severe septic patients with DIC were enrolled from 10 university hospitals and randomly assigned into the intervention group (n=88) and control group (n=83).Routine therapies were administered in both groups, and Xuebijing injection was used in the intervention group additionally.Incidence of DIC, clinical severity scores and coagulation parameters at seven days after administration of Xuebijing injection were compared between the two groups. The short-term prognosis of patients was assessed by 28-day mortality.Compared with the control group, the incidence of DIC in the intervention group was significantly lower at seven days after administration of Xuebijing injection (P <0.001).In addition, the differences of platelet and prothrombin time (values at baseline minus values at seven days after administration of Xuebijing injection) were significantly higher in the intervention group, and the differences of the Mortality in Emergency Departments Sepsis (MEDS) score and Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) Ⅱ score (values at baseline minus values at seven days after administration of Xuebijing injection) were significantly higher in the intervention group than control group (P all <0.05).28-day mortality was significantly lower in the intervention group (P=0.034).These results indicated that Xuebijing injection can effectively treat DIC caused by severe sepsis. In addition, Xuebijing injection can improve the short-term prognosis of severe septic patients with DIC.
