The mouth represents one potential source of infection and inflammation in women,in part, because of the contributions of endogenous hormones and plaque accumulation to disease development.Pregnancy represents a specific period of risk for "pregnancy gingivitis",including a dramatic increase in plaque and gingivitis beginning in the late first trimester as an inflammatory response to a mixed oral infection. In addition to the adverse oral health effects, new evidence shows systemic transmission of oral microflora, and specifically implicates certain oral species in adverse pregnancy outcomes. This program reviews the diagnosis of pregnancy gingivitis, treatment options during pregnancy, and research evidence on the potential effects on oral health and pregnancy outcomes.Oral Health and Pregnancy · Pregnancy gingivitis-clinical presentation & diagnosis· Hygiene & clinical response· Oral health implications & pregnancy outcomesPossible adverse pregnancy outcomes related to oral disease inflammation are many, and may impact gestational age and birth weight, plus spontaneous preterm births under 37 weeks.
