Background, Motivation and Objective The capability of identifying the non-linear behavior of ultrasonic transducers and samples under test can be extremely useful in various ultrasonic diagnostic and nondestructive evaluation applications. Several defect detection strategies as well as imaging procedures have been recently proposed relying on the non-linear behavior of defects that produces second or higher-order harmonics [1]. At the same time, innovative methods for the generation of broadband signals exploit non-linear phenomena such as for the case of solitary waves [2]. The aim of the present work is to apply a pulse-compression procedure based on exponential chirp excitation to the characterization of non-linear behavior of various ultrasonic systems.
