We examined the behavior and bioavailability of dissolved sugars along a salinity gradient in the Pearl River Estuary during a wet season (August,2005) and a dry season (March 2006).Total dissolved carbohydrate (TDCHO) and dissolved monosaccharides (MCHO) were measured using the 3-methyl-2-benzothiazolinone hydrazone hydrochloride (MBTH) method and Polysaccharides (PCHO) was derived by the difference.At the river end-member,TDCHO ranged 20.5-139.7 μmol glucose-C L -1 in summer and 31.5-67.1 μmol glucose-C L -1 in spring while MCHO ranged 4.5-36.0 μmol glucose-C L -1 in summer and 14.4-26.3 μmol glucose-C L -1 in spring.Within the mixing zone of the estuary,TDCHO ranged 18.2-72.3 μmol glucose-C L -1 in summer and 12.4-42.6 μmol glucose-C L -1 in spring; MCHO ranged 3.2-17.2 μmol glucose-C L -1 in summer and 5.1-14.9 μmol glucose-C L -1 in spring.These concentrations and their variation are among the range reported for typical estuarine environment.
