Actinomycetes are known to produce metabolites that could be bioactive compounds and/or plant growth promoters.The aim of this study was to identify actinomycetes isolated from soil samples around oil palm trees collected from United Plantation in Tefuk Jntan,Perak and strains isolated from soil samples from palm trees at Rimba fimu,University Malaya,Kuala Lumpur.Three strains not only had potential as biocontrol agents against Ganoderma boninense,a pathogen that causes butt rot of the oil palm but were plant growth enhancers,too.The strains were characterised for morphological and physiological characteristics.Molecular analysis based on 16S rDNA gone sequences and phylogenetic analyses of these strains by neighbour-joining method was conducted.Based on spore morphology and cell wall chemotype,the three strains AUM 000500,AUM000501 and AUM000502 were tentatively identified as Streptomyces spp.Based on DNA homology suggested AUM000500 was similar to Streptomyces sanglieri,strain AUM000501 similar to Streptomyces antibioticus and strain AUM000502 was similar to Streptomyces cyaneus To our this is the first report that these strains have biocontrol potentials and plant growth promoting properties.
