According to a report from Food and Agriculture Organization, the total worldwide production of white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) was approximately 2.7 million metric tonnes in 2010.Of the total amount, 81.88% was from the Asia region and China alone contributed 44.95% of total production.It left less than 20% of total white shrimp production came from Central and South America where white shrimp is a native species.White shrimp is an exogenous species in Asia and was introduced from Americas.However, its production level has exceeded all native Asian species and was almost three times of the production of a major native species, tiger prawn (Penaeus monodon).The main factors attributed to the selection of white shrimp as a target species for farming in the Asia include but are not limited to shrimp disease outbreaks and the availability of Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) white shrimp stocks from Hawaii.Although Hawaii did not have native marine shrimp species being commercially culture so far, white shrimp farming in the state has become an essential element to the continuation of marine shrimp farming worldwide.This presentation will discuss the process of making Hawaii the center of white shrimp farming, and propose next steps we should consider in order to sustain white shrimp farming in Asia, particularly in China.
