Contact angle saturation typically limits electrowetting contact angle modulation to a maximum range of 180° to 60°.Going beyond the saturation angle often results in significant wetting hysteresis and dielectric damage.In this work, contact angle saturation down to 20° is achieved.A series of experiments were performed to reveal what physics or materials factors allow the low-contact angle.The 3-phase system tested included propylene glycol, hydrocarbon oil, and fluoropolymer-coated Parylene C.This work challenges the notion that contact angle modulation is not reliable beyond the initial onset of saturation, and may prove useful for electrowetting devices such as optics, displays and lab-on-chip.
