It has long been desired to use the relatively inert alkanes directly as much cheaper precursors than their commonly employed functionalized derivatives for polymerization processes.Although bulk gold has been considered minimally reactive,our recent studies revealed that,the Au(110) surface which exhibits a onedimensional (1D) geometrical constraint,can act as the platform for alkane polymerization.
